A 27-year-old man was arrested following a high-speed chase that spanned multiple counties on Friday evening.
Per a California Highway Patrol media statement, officers with the L.A. Police Department initiated a pursuit on a Nissan Sentra – later found to be driven by Luchiano Antonio Lewis Villanueva – just after 6:50 p.m.
The pursuit started in the North Hollywood area and was initiated for suspicion of DUI and weapons possession, the CHP said.
“Villanueva fled in his vehicle from LAPD, and a high-speed vehicle pursuit ensued on the 101 Freeway towards Ventura County at speeds of up to 110 miles per hour,” CHP added.
Upon driving into Ventura County, LAPD units relinquished the pursuit to officers at the CHP’s West Valley Area station, which chased Villanueva for a further 15 miles at high speeds.
Units from CHP’s Ventura Area station were able to successfully deploy a spike strip on the left-side tires of Villanueva’s Sentra, which “drastically reduced” his speeds; however, he kept going before eventually being forced to stop on the right shoulder of the 101 just before the Seaward Avenue off-ramp due to the damaged tires, officials said.
“A high-risk stop was conducted, and Villanueva was successfully taken into custody without further incident,” CHP said.
The 27-year-old was then transferred to the custody of the LAPD, who responded to the scene. He was arrested and charged with various felonies, law enforcement officials confirmed.
Sky5 was over part of the pursuit on Friday night, where Villanueva was seen hitting speeds of nearly 100 miles per hour on the freeway, driving recklessly on surface streets, running red lights, weaving through lanes quickly and narrowly missing other vehicles.
However, the crew in Sky5 was not able to capture the termination of the pursuit, as low fog and clouds made it unsafe to continue tracking the situation from the sky.
