With changing leaves and cooler temperatures upon us, outerwear season is back again, so why not invest in a tried-and-true staple that has kept sailors and men about town warm for over two centuries? Here are the T market editor Jameson Montgomery’s favorite options.
1. Quince, $180
Quince offers a quite affordable pea coat in a blend of Italian wool and nylon. The direct-to-consumer brand claims it will keep its wearer comfortable in temperatures as low as 6 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. L.L. Bean, $330
The Maine-based outfitter L.L. Bean’s classic six-button style closely resembles those issued for the U.S. Navy in both its silhouette and dark shade of blue wool.
3. Calvin Klein, $389
Calvin Klein’s modern take on a four-button pea coat features a slightly boxy fit and comes in a heathered charcoal textured wool blend.
4. COS, $479
The retailer COS sells a double-faced wool pea coat in a caramel shade that has rounded shoulders, resulting in a softer silhouette. If you want a full look, the brand also offers matching trousers.
5. Our Legacy, $650
The Swedish fashion brand Our Legacy’s pea coat departs from traditional wool in favor of a lighter blend of Turkish cotton and hemp.
6. Vince, $698
Vince offers a slightly elongated pea coat in a rich brown shade of peached cotton, which refers to a technique by which cotton fibers are brushed and then trimmed to create a suede-like texture that resembles the skin of a peach.
7. Paul Smith, $795
The British designer Paul Smith’s pea coat has a classic double-breasted silhouette and comes in a dark navy blend of wool and cashmere.
8. RRL, $990
RRL, the vintage-inspired sublabel of Ralph Lauren that’s named after the designer’s Colorado ranch, offers a corduroy pea coat modeled after a late 19th-century version, and that features Japanese indigo denim trim on its pockets and sleeves.

The American tailoring house Paul Stuart’s Italian-made double-breasted pea coat is a more luxurious take on the outerwear staple thanks to the chocolate suede trim at its shoulders, front pocket and sleeve straps.
10. Giorgio Armani, $7,500
The Milanese brand Giorgio Armani offers an indulgent — and extra warm — style in lambskin. It’s cut a bit longer than the average pea coat and is reversible, so its wearer can opt to feel supple skin or cozy fur.
