ATHENS, Ala. (WHNT) — The City of Athens announced that recycling services will soon resume for residents.

According to Athens Sanitation Superintendent Terence Brown, recycling services will resume starting Monday, Oct. 27.

The City of Decatur notified the City of Athens that it can reinstitute accepting recyclable materials. Carter Watkins, Decatur Recycling communications manager, said that its facilities were operating at full capacity.

“In September, the Work Release Center temporarily paused inmate assignments, reducing our staffing and limiting operations. “To ensure uninterrupted recycling for Decatur residents, we temporarily stopped accepting materials from Athens, Hartselle, Limestone County, and Cullman.”

Athens offers curbside recycling for residents to not only promote recycling, but to also reduce tipping fees at the landfill.

Curbside recycling is offered on a rotating schedule. Those who live west of U.S. 31 are on the first and third Mondays, and those who live east of U.S. 31 are on the second and fourth Mondays.

The city suspended its recycling services earlier this month because it couldn’t find anyone to accept the city’s recyclable materials.
