ARDMORE, Ala. (WHNT) — Cedar Hill Elementary School is set to host a day-long fire prevention and safety event.

The effort comes in the wake of a heartbreaking fire in August that killed a father and his son.

Jennifer Griffin said that by the time she, her husband and three children woke around midnight, the entire home was filled with smoke.

Griffin’s husband, Dakota Daly, and their 6-year-old son Jaydin died in the fire.

Investigators told News 19 that there were no working fire detectors in the home.

Jaydin was in kindergarten at Cedar Hill, and the school will host a day of prevention in his honor, with the focus on both public remembrance and education about fire safety to prevent future tragedies.

“I immediately reached out to Jason Steele at Ardmore Fire and Rescue,” said Nona Adams, principal at Cedar Hill. “He’s been a parent here at our school, and I said how we can make sure that this happens, and we went from there. Our SRO officers and several people have stepped up, and we’ve met with so many people, and it’s grown into this great event.”

“After the morning of, we got the call. Principal Adams reached out to us, and her motto was ‘this will never happen again on my watch,’ and I want every student to have a smoke detector that can.”

Steele reached out to the Alabama Fire College, whose program is called “Get Along Alarmed”, where the companies provide the smoke detectors.

Parents who attend the event will receive a free smoke detector upon request.

The Ardmore community has done everything that they could for the mom, Jennifer Griffin, and her two surviving sons. Paying for funeral expenses and donating more clothes and items.

Griffin is very thankful for the support

“They’ve shown so much support and just honoring my child that means a whole lot,” said Griffin. “It means the world to me and the kids. They are the reason why I am able to wake up every day.”

Ardmore Fire and Rescue and the Athens-Limestone EMS will also hold classes for adults on fire prevention.
