EXCLUSIVE: Picturehouse has taken all North American distribution rights to Patrick Creadon’s new documentary, The King of Color, about Lawrence Herbert, the creator of the Pantone Matching System (PMS).

The movie is playing AFI Fest on Friday, Oct. 24, with a limited theatrical release on Dec. 12.

Herbert, a visionary whose innovative idea to standardize color with the Pantone Matching System, revolutionized the worldwide language and use of color. The documentary features an exclusive interview with Herbert, offering a glimpse into the mind behind Pantone and his impact on how we perceive and use color today.

“Pantone is a language that connects artists, designers, and brands across the globe,” said Bob Berney, CEO of Picturehouse. “We’re proud to bring The King of Color to audiences everywhere and to honor Larry Herbert’s legacy of innovation and influence. Patrick Creadon has crafted a film that is as vibrant and inspiring as its subject.”

Creadon’s previous credits include his feature directorial debut, 2006’s Wordplay, which profiles the New York Times crossword. A Sundance world premiere, Wordplay continued on to be named one of the National Board of Review’s top five documentaries of 2006. Creadon’s other directing credits include 2013’s If You Build It, : ESPN’s 2018 30 for 30: Catholics vs. Convicts and Hersburgh, and 2019’s Ski Bum: The Warren Miller Story.
