Looking to get from the Westside to the Valley in 20 minutes? If Culver City gets its way, Los Angeles Metro will make that a reality.

The city on Wednesday announced its support for Alternatives 4 and 5 for the Sepulveda Transit Corridor, which would connect Sherman Oaks to Santa Monica and Van Nuys to Westwood, respectively, by heavy rail.

Culver City officials like Mayor Dan O’Brien point out that the public transit will reduce demand on the 405 Freeway if approved by Metro next year, a notion the agency addresses on its website.

“The Sepulveda Transit Corridor is a proposed high-capacity rail line that will provide a crucial north-south transit connection between the San Fernando Valley, the Westside and eventually Los Angeles International Airport (LAX),” the agency said. “Currently under environmental review, Metro is evaluating multiple alternatives — including heavy rail and monorail technologies — to address one of the most heavily traveled and congested corridors in Los Angeles County.

If O’Brien and Culver City get their way, one of their chosen routes will be presented to the Metro Board of Directors as the Locally Preferred Alternative.

Metro says $9.5 billion in funding has already been identified for the project, which is expected to be completed between 2033 and 2035, as reported by LAist.
