EXCLUSIVE: In a competitive situation, James Wan’s Atomic Monster has acquired the rights to Julie Soto’s bestselling YA psychological thriller The Thrashers for television. Search is underway for a writer to adapt the novel as a TV series.

The Thrashers revolves around the eponymous Thrashers, the elite exclusive friend group at New Helvetia High. It includes Julian, Lucy, Paige, and the infamous Zack Thrasher who are rich, sophisticated, and love attention, as well as Jodi Dillon who was never meant to be one of them and feels out of place, but Zack’s her childhood best friend, so she’s in.

When Emily Mills, who desperately wanted to be a Thrasher, dies — the whispers about the Thrashers begin. As Emily’s journal surfaces, detectives close in, and Jodi faces an impossible choice: betray her friends or protect herself. Meanwhile, as eerie messages and strange occurrences escalate, it becomes clear — Emily isn’t done with them yet.

“The Thrashers is so dear to my heart, and it’s a dream of mine to bring it to television,” Soto said. “I am so excited to work with the Atomic Monster team, and to trust them to bring these characters to life.”

Soto made her YA debut with The Thrashers, which was an immediate New York Times, USA Today and ABA Indie bestseller when it was published in May. Soto’s previous books include bestselling romance novels Not Another Love Song, Forget Me Not and Rose In Chains. Her work has been translated into 16 languages. Soto is repped by IAG and Sheil Land Associates.

In TV, Atomic Monster recently produced the Peacock horror series Teacup and the docuseries True Haunting, which just debuted on Netflix. Coming up are The Copenhagen Test for Peacock and 56 Days for Prime Video.
