PHOENIX — Gina Swoboda, the chairwoman of Arizona’s Republican Party, announced Monday that she is running to represent Arizona in Congress with a ringing endorsement from President Donald Trump.

Swoboda announced her candidacy for the state’s 1st Congressional District (CD1) in a social media post on Monday afternoon.

“Over the last month, I have been overwhelmed and humbled by the outpouring of encouragement I have received from supporters across this district to run for this seat and keep it in Republican hands,” Swoboda said.

The seat, which represents much of the northeast Valley, including north Phoenix, Scottsdale, Cave Creek and Fountain Hills, is being vacated due to incumbent Rep. David Schweikert’s run for Arizona governor.

Swoboda’s announcement also touted her endorsement from Trump.

On X, the president said he believes Swoboda has the skills to represent Arizona’s wealthiest district in Congress.

“Gina Swoboda has my complete and total endorsement for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District,” Trump said. “Gina will be a tremendous champion for Arizona in Congress. She will never let you down!”

Swoboda said she was “deeply honored” to have Trump’s endorsement.

Swoboda is running on a campaign of economic growth, prosperity, border security and protecting taxpayers.

Gina Swoboda joins crowded race for CD1 Republican nomination

Swoboda is now one of eight Republicans who have announced their candidacy for Schweikert’s seat, according to the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office (AZSOS).

Here’s a look at the full list, as of Oct. 20, 2025:

  • Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs kicks off reelection campaign by touting 1st-term record
  • What voters need to know about Prop 409, Maricopa County's $900M bond measure
  • Jason Duey
  • Dusko Jovicic
  • Kaitlin Purrington
  • Paul Reevs
  • Joseph Russell
  • Brandon Sowers
  • Brandon Sproles
  • Gina Swoboda

All of the candidates except for Purrington, Russell and Sproles filed their papers to run for CD1 after Schweikert announced his run for governor on Sept. 30, according to AZSOS.

Meanwhile, a total of 12 Democrats have filed statements of interest to run for the CD1 seat, including Amish Shah, who lost to Schweikert in the 2024 election, and Marlene Galán-Woods, who finished third in the Democratic primary that year.

The Republican and Democratic candidates will face off in primary elections on Aug. 4, 2026.

The winners will square off in the general election on Nov. 3, 2026.
