MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is asking people to be aware of a recent rise in telephone scams in the area.

According to MCSO, residents have reported they have received calls from people claiming to be with the sheriff’s office or other government agencies demanding immediate payment.

“In most cases, the scammers instruct victims to purchase gift cards, make wire transfers, or provide personal banking information under the pretense of resolving fictitious legal matters such as missed jury duty or unpaid fines,” MCSO said.

The sheriff’s office is advising people to never provide personal or financial information over the phone, hang up on suspicious calls and contact MCSO to report attempted scams.

“Let me be very clear, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office will never call to demand payment or say you’ll be arrested. These scammers are very sophisticated and will use fear and urgency in order to trick people, and they’re good at it. If you get a call like that, hang up and give us a call directly,” Sheriff Kevin Turner added.

Anyone who believes they have received a scam call is encouraged to contact the Madison County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at (256) 722-7181.
