The massive Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage that has disrupted online activity around the world is also impacting Amtrak customers’ ability to make reservations.

“Amtrak is currently experiencing intermittent technical difficulties that are impacting several key services,” the rail service announced on its website Monday morning.

Customers were given the following information:

  • Customer Care Center and station staff are unable to update existing reservations or process payments.
  • Customers are currently unable to book reservations through Amtrak.com or the mobile app.
  • Customer communications via SMS, email, and push notifications are temporarily disrupted.

Amtrak said it was working with its business partner to resolve the problems, but said that if customers are traveling Monday they should arrive at the station 30 minutes prior to their train’s departure.

“We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience,” Amtrak said.

Real-time service information can be found on @AmtrakAlerts on X.

Early Monday morning, On DownDetector — a website that tracks online outages — users reported issues with Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, online broker Robinhood, the McDonald’s app and many other services.

The first signs of trouble emerged at around 3:11 a.m. Eastern Time, when AWS reported on its Health Dashboard that it is “investigating increased error rates and latencies for multiple AWS services in the US-EAST-1 Region.”

Cybersecurity expert Patrick Burgess from U.K.-based BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, said there was no indication that the outage was caused by something like a cyberattack.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
