One person was killed and 13 others, including children, were injured after a hit-and-run driver plowed into a group of people at a children’s birthday party in a Maryland town on Saturday night, the police said.
The police in Bladensburg, Md., outside Washington, were called around 10:15 p.m. about a driver who had crashed into a tent where people were gathered for the party, the police said on Sunday.
Among the victims were eight children, ranging from 1 year to 17 years old, and six adults. One of the adults, Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez, 31, of Washington, died from her injuries, the police said
Three adults were admitted to the hospital and were in stable condition. One was awaiting treatment, and one was discharged, the police said early on Sunday afternoon.
Seven of the children were treated and discharged from a hospital. One was admitted and was in stable condition, the police said.
The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, the police said. A 66-year-old man from Washington later identified himself as the driver and turned himself in, according to the police. He was not publicly named.
A crash investigator has interviewed the driver, who faces criminal charges, the police said.
What led to the crash was not known. The police said they would hold a news conference Monday morning.
