BLADENSBURG, Md. (WDCW) — A woman is dead and several other people, including multiple children, were seriously injured after a vehicle crashed into a child’s birthday party in Bladensburg, Maryland, police said.
Police were called to the scene shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday in Bladensburg, located just a few miles northeast of Washington, D.C.
There, police learned that a car was traveling “from the area of Annapolis Road” when it struck the crowd, which was gathered in a tent in front of a home for a child’s birthday party, according to officials.
Fourteen people were struck in the crash, including Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez, 31, of Washington, D.C., who later died from her injuries.
Of the 14 people, eight were children ranging from 1 to 17 years old, officials noted. As of Sunday morning, six of the children have been treated and released from the hospital, while one remains in stable condition.
Meanwhile, one adult has been released from the hospital as three others are in stable condition, and one is “pending treatment.” Police had initially reported that 11 people were taken to area hospitals, including Children’s National.
Investigators said the driver who hit the crowd ran away from the scene after the collision. However, in an update Sunday afternoon, police identified the driver as a 66-year-old D.C. man, who had turned himself in.
“Consultation with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney is underway and criminal charges are pending against the driver,” a news release issued by the BPD stated.
As Bladensburg police continue to investigate, officials urge anyone with information to call the Bladensburg Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at (301) 864-6080.
No additional details were immediately available.
