PHOENIX — From a one-in-a-million pregnancy to the lethal injection of Richard Djerf, here are some of the top Arizona news stories from Oct. 12-19.

Valley mother diagnosed with rare condition gives birth to baby boy after ‘1-in-a-million’ pregnancy

For many families, the road to welcoming children can be long and include many twists and turns.

That was the case for a Valley mother, who welcomed a baby boy earlier this year after what doctors described as a “c” high-risk pregnancy.

Bendu Kiazolu, 35, gave birth to her son, Benzi, in March at the Abrazo Health Arrowhead campus in Glendale after she underwent an innovative treatment program that included 18-hour-long infusion sessions meant to suppress her immune system.

“If you were to characterize Bendu’s clinical situation when she started this pregnancy with us, it was probably already a one-in-a-million pregnancy, if not one-in-five-million,” Dr. Ravi Gunatilake, the specialist in maternal and fetal medicine at Abrazo Arrowhead who led Kiazolu’s care team, said in a press release.

Gunatilake determined the treatment plan after determining Kiazolu’s immune system was attacking her unborn children through the placenta.

This is a rare condition known as Gestational Alloimmune Liver Disease, or GALD.

This condition led to Kiazolu losing five children before the birth of her son, according to the hospital.

Convicted killer Richard Djerf dies by lethal injection in Arizona’s 2nd execution this year

Convicted killer Richard Djerf died by lethal injection on Friday morning as the death penalty was carried out in Arizona for the second time this year.

Djerf, 55, was executed by a pentobarbital injection at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Florence. The time of death was 10:40 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry (ADCRR).

John Barcello, ADCRR’s deputy director, said IVs began being inserted at 10:05 a.m. The process was completed at 10:21 a.m.

“Mr. Djerf’s veins were not optimal, which was expected, resulting in a few attempts prior to a successful IV placement,” Barcello said.

Djerf then received a total of four injections, with the final injection completed at 10:28 a.m.

Demonstrations take place around the Valley, nationwide for ‘No Kings’ protests

Arizonans protesting the country’s trajectory under President Donald Trump gathered throughout Saturday around the Valley as part of “No Kings” demonstrations.

A Tempe “No Kings” march started in Cole Park at 8 a.m. and Tempe Rising Indivisible — the event organizer — told KTAR News 92.3 FM that more than 5,000 people showed up.

Demonstrations were also planned at the following locations:

  • The Arizona State Capitol
  • Glendale, at the intersection of 51st Avenue and Bell Road
  • Queen Creek, at the intersection of Gantzel and Combs roads
  • Maricopa, at the corner of State Route 347 and Smith Enke Road
  • Mesa, at the corner of Baseline Road and Val Vista Drive
  • Fountain Hills
  • Flagstaff City Hall

“The president thinks his rule is absolute,”  the organization wrote on an event listing for Saturday’s demonstration at the state capitol in Phoenix. “But in America, we don’t have kings, and we won’t back down against chaos, corruption and cruelty.”

“No Kings” protests took over parts of the Valley in June to oppose Trump and his expensive military parade in Washington D.C. to honor the Army’s 250th anniversary, which also coincided with his birthday.

Gov. Katie Hobbs defends record fighting illegal immigration in wake of opponent’s ICE claims

Two candidates in Arizona’s upcoming gubernatorial race sparred on Thursday over Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs’ record on border security and her stance on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Karrin Taylor Robson, one of the leading Republican contenders in next year’s primary, slammed Hobbs during an appearance on KTAR News 92.3 FM’s The Mike Broomhead Show. She criticized the incumbent Hobbs’ stance on border security and claimed the governor opposed President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

“She even called for the defunding of ICE,” Taylor Robson said.

Later that day, Hobbs refuted that claim during an interview with KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Outspoken with Bruce & Gaydos.

Calling Taylor Robson’s accusation “absolutely” false, Hobbs emphasized her commitment to border security and praised Trump’s efforts.

Valley Metro announces changes to bus service, bus stops in downtown Phoenix

Bus service in downtown Phoenix will undergo major changes, Valley Metro announced on Thursday.

The service changes will be implemented on Oct. 27 to better the connections between local bus, Express/RAPID routes and the light rail, the regional transit system said.

The Washington/Central Avenue station will reopen during all service hours, while also serving as a stop for B Line passengers.

The Greg Stanton Central Station will reopen and serve routes 0, 1, 3, 7, 10 and DASH.
