Los Angeles’ main transportation hub is getting a new tenant, one that doesn’t require full-time staff to stock shelves or ring up shoppers.

A new self-contained VenHub autonomous “smart store” will open at L.A. Union Station by the end of the month, according to the company.

VenHub stores utilize robotics, automation, real-time inventory tracking and app-based checkout for customers, which the company says provides “secure, convenient retail access” at any time of day.

The store is equipped with two robotic arms that grab products from the shelves or coolers and place them in designated bins upon a customer’s arrival. The stores look similar to shipping containers with a solid steel frame, but feature bulletproof glass, security cameras and other anti-theft design.

The Las Vegas-based technology company, founded by former employees at Amazon, has already partnered with the LA Metro system. It opened a store at the LAX/Metro Transit Center when that station opened to the public in June.

The response, according to VenHub, has been positive with “strong customer demand and frequent restocking cycles.”

“Our expanded partnership demonstrates what is possible when public infrastructure and private innovation come together to serve people,” said VenHub CEO Shahan Ohanessian. “We are honored to continue working with LA Metro to bring our vision for the future of retail to life at Union Station.”

The Union Station store will be located at street level on the east side of the station near the Patsaouras bus plaza and will offer more than 400 everyday essentials, officials said. It will not replace any existing businesses on the property.

“VenHub is a perfect match for Union Station’s ongoing evolution as a dynamic, accessible hub for our community,” said Susie Vance, senior director of marketing for Morlin Asset Management, which handles the day-to-day operations of the historic train depot. “This partnership reflects our continued commitment to bringing forward-thinking, customer-centric solutions to one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.”

In addition to the two LA Metro station stores, VenHub has three quick-service locations in the L.A. area, including Hollywood, North Hollywood and Glendale.
