Details have emerged in an apparent murder-suicide inside an Orange County restaurant that was witnessed by several people, authorities announced.

On Oct. 14, officers with the La Habra Police Department responded to a “shots fired” call at Gui Gui Korean BBQ in The Palm Court shopping mall located at 1240 W. Imperial Hwy just before 7 p.m.

At the restaurant, police located a man and a woman suffering from serious injuries, both of whom were declared dead at the scene by medical personnel with the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Investigators now say that the victim, 45-year-old Covina resident Jaqueline Medrano, and the suspected gunman, 35-year-old Long Beach resident Jonathan Wang, had previously been in a romantic relationship.

“Based on preliminary information, the incident appears to be a targeted attack of murder-suicide,” La Habra investigators said in a Wednesday news release. “Mr. Wang shot Ms. Medrano before dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Several others inside the restaurant at the time of the deadly exchange, presumably restaurant staff and customers, witnessed the incident, though no one else was physically injured during the attack.

Detectives later learned that on Sept. 16, the Los Angeles Superior Court issued a criminal protective order that prohibited Wang from contacting the victim. The order was active at the time of the incident.

While the investigation remains ongoing, police said there is no indication that there are any outstanding suspects, nor is there any known threat to the community. Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact La Habra Police Department Detective N. Pineda at 562-383-4353.

If you or anyone you know is suffering from a mental health crisis, professional support can be found for free by calling or texting Crisis Lifeline at 988.
