An Apple Valley man died Sunday afternoon after his all-terrain vehicle collided with an SUV.
The incident occurred around 4:59 p.m. on Oct. 12 at the intersection of Navajo Road and Ottawa Road, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The victim, identified as 40-year-old Juan M. Rodriguez Mendoza, was riding a blue 2002 Yamaha YFM660 when the collision happened.
Investigators said Rodriguez Mendoza was traveling westbound on Ottawa Road when he crossed Navajo Road from a stop sign, entering the lane of a southbound silver 2016 Honda CR-V driven by a 58-year-old Apple Valley man with two passengers. The SUV broadsided the ATV, ejecting Rodriguez Mendoza from the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital for higher-level care, where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. All occupants of the vehicle were also taken to a hospital for treatment.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Major Accident Investigative Team is leading the investigation, collecting evidence at the scene and interviewing witnesses. Officials said the investigation is ongoing.
