An unknown number of human remains have been recovered from a makeshift desert junkyard in the Antelope Valley, investigators with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to KTLA.
Authorities said they were called Sunday just before 12:30 p.m. after a resident, who lives nearby, reported that her dog found what appeared to be a human skull at the site located near 124th Street East and Pearlblossom Highway in unincorporated Palmdale.
A large crew of L.A. County medical examiners responded to the property, which is reportedly listed under the name Speed Motors Auto Repair and Body.
After a briefing, footage of the investigation obtained by KTLA showed investigators scouring the area, which was littered with vehicles, appliances and other large items before appearing to concentrate on a blue SUV and a large storage container.
It’s unclear just how long the medical examiners were at the scene, but video showed crews leaving the scene, along with fire and law enforcement personnel.
No details were provided about what exactly investigators found, with LASD Homicide Bureau Lt. Vizcarra telling KTLA that it was far too early in the investigation to tell how many remains were recovered.
This is at least the third instance this year in which human remains have been recovered in what appears to be suspicious circumstances.
On Sept. 8, the dismembered remains of Celeste Rivas Hernandez, 14, were found inside a bag in a trunk of an impounded Tesla in Hollywood. It was quickly reported that the registered owner of the Tesla was a multiplatinum R&B artist with alleged ties to the teen.
No arrests have been made in that case.
Just a day later, on Sept. 9, the charred remains of another person were found inside a vehicle in a South Los Angeles tow yard. Earlier this month, authorities announced the arrest of a 52-year-old woman in connection with that investigation.
