NEW DELHI (AP) — John Campbell scored his maiden century as West Indies pushed to ensure India would have to bat again in the second cricket test, reaching 252-3 in its second innings at lunch on Day 4.

Campbell, whose previous best was 68 against New Zealand in 2020, scored 115 runs off 199 balls and shared a 177-run partnership with Shai Hope as West Indies reduced India’s lead to just 18 runs.

At the interval, Hope was closing on his third test hundred, unbeaten on 92 runs, and skipper Roston Chase was 23 not out.

India managed just the one wicket in the morning session — Campbell adjudged lbw to Ravindra Jadeja on a slow Delhi wicket.

West Indies was bowled out for 248 runs in its first innings on Day 3, surrendering a lead of 270 runs after India declared at India’s 518.

Shubman Gill enforced the follow-on, but Campbell’s efforts appeared to have staved off an innings defeat.

, after winning the first test in Ahmedabad by an innings and 40 runs.

West Indies has not beaten India in their last 26 tests — home or away — dating to 2002.

Campbell resumed Monday on 87 not out and reached his triple figures within the first hour.

He reached his hundred off 174 balls, smacking his third six of the innings, and was greeted with huge cheers from the visitors’ dressing room.

It was the first century for West Indies in this series and continued to build on an overall improved batting performance in this test.

Jadeja finally got the breakthrough – Campbell was adjudged lbw in the 64th over trying a reverse sweep. The batter reviewed but it was struck down.
