Donnie Wahlberg reprises the role of Danny Reagan in Blue Bloods offshoot Boston Blue and the star is dreaming of a crossover movie. Wahlberg was in Cannes with co-star Sonequa Martin-Green for the world premiere of Boston Blue, which was a curtain-raiser for the MIPCOM event.

Deadline moderated a Q&A after the premiere, where the actor teased the growing overlap between the Boston Blue and Blue Bloods universes. With Blue Bloods star Bridget Moynahan and Danny’s son Sean appearing in the Boston Blue opener, Wahlberg hinted at more crossovers to come

“There were zero [Blue Bloods] castmates originally in the [Boston Blue] pilot, now they’re creeping in, and they’ll be coming back,” Wahlberg said.

“In success, this could lead anywhere,” he said about his new show, which he also exec produces. “This could lead to another Blue Bloods-universe show and you know, my dream is, in success, we do a movie all together. We get Blue Bloods and Boston Blue together and do a feature film. But yes, we want to incorporate [both] worlds as much as possible.”

Blue Bloods ran for 14 seasons on CBS and sold extensively worldwide. Wahlberg said that he had gone into bat to keep the show on air, and although that effort was unsuccessful, he hoped his new series will carry the torch.

“Nobody fought harder than me to keep that show on TV, but this show has the opportunity to keep that legacy. Boston Blue is the way to do that. We have characters from Blue Bloods and we’re answering questions that have never been answered before.”

Wahlberg and Martin-Green had already given Deadline a deep-dive into their new show. They were in good spirits in Cannes, pressing the flesh with buyers and taking selfies with the crowd before the premiere.

Premieres are hard to pull off at TV markets, but the show landed well with the MIPCOM crowd. Given it is a sales market, the focus of any big-ticket premiere is putting wind in the international distribution sails of a show. We’ll stay tuned for sales news.
