PHOENIX — It only took about four hours on Saturday for Phoenix to receive a record amount of rain for Oct. 11, according to the National Weather Service.

The previous daily record of 0.31 inches, which was set in 1928, was unofficially surpassed at 4:05 a.m., per NWS readings from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

As of 7:15 a.m., Phoenix had doubled that total (0.62).

Some areas in Tempe saw more than a full inch land during the period of 1 a.m. to 7 a.m., Broadway Road and the Loop 101 having absorbed 1.1 inches and nearby University Drive and Alma School Road 1.06.

Virtually every corner of Scottsdale received at least 0.5 inches of rain and much of the East Valley was hit with at least 0.75 inches, Mesa Gateway Airport receiving 0.63 and Mesa Drive and the US 60 got 0.75 in the same early morning period.

Widespread light to moderate showers continue across most of south-central AZ. Activity will come to an end across the Phoenix area by 9-10 AM MST but will continue into the higher terrain areas east of Phoenix through the early afternoon hours. #azwx pic.twitter.com/ZsmBMnyOII

Friday saw 0.26 inches by its end, almost halfway to its own daily rainfall record.

  • Metro Phoenix forecast calls for rainy weather, potential flooding through weekend

A flood watch, which was originally supposed to last in metro Phoenix from Friday through Saturday night, was extended by NWS to last through Sunday evening. According to the latest update at 3 a.m. Saturday, additional rainfall “as high as 1 to 2 inches” is forecasted through Sunday.

The morning episode of rain will end in south and central Arizona between the 9 and 10 a.m. hour but continue east of Phoenix, according to NWS’ radar.
