Community members are helping a 93-year-old Southern California man search for his lost dog, whom he calls his beloved companion.
This past weekend, Norman Feigenbaum had taken a quick trip to the supermarket, but when he returned, he discovered his 7-year-old yellow Labrador, Sunny, had somehow escaped from his West Hills home by running through a fence in the backyard.
Feigenbaum had adopted Sunny about four years ago from an East L.A. shelter. Her previous owner had apparently died, and Feigenbaum had nursed the skittish dog back to health.
Since then, Sunny has been a dependable friend and presence for Feigenbaum, who now lives alone.
“Ultimately, this became our home,” Feigenbaum told KTLA’s Rachel Menitoff. “She’s a loving, sweet, fine dog and I’ve got to find her.”
Someone had reportedly seen Sunny on Roscoe Boulevard, about half a mile from Feigenbaum’s home, but the trail has since gone cold.
Now, Dog Days Search & Rescue, a SoCal-based nonprofit focused on finding missing pets, is stepping in to help.
Workers are asking residents in the West Hills area to check their home or doorbell camera footage for Sunny, dating back to Oct. 4, and to keep an eye out for her around open spaces.
However, if Sunny is spotted, it’s not recommended to approach her.
“We do not want anybody to try to catch the dog, follow the dog or chase the dog,” said Jennifer Justice, a spokesperson with Dog Days Search & Rescue. “We really just need them to give us a call, let us know the area, the cross street and the time of day is very important.”
While the search for Sunny continues, Feigenbaum said he hopes his dog stays safe and that they’ll be reunited before long.
“It’s lonely without her, desperately so,” he said.
Sunny is not wearing a collar, but she is microchipped, so she can be taken to any local veterinarian for a scan.
