A mobile home fire killed a woman and a dog in San Bernardino County despite crews’ best efforts to save them, fire officials confirmed Friday morning.

Late Thursday night, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department, crews responded to what was originally called in as a vegetation fire on Laurel Avenue.

However, firefighters arrived and, once they were able to navigate down a long driveway on the ranch-style property, realized it was a mobile home that was engulfed in flames.

Officials said the crews quickly balanced the call to a full structure response. They reported heavy smoke conditions from within the trailer, and flames had already spread to adjacent trees.

“Access was hampered by debris, equipment and vehicles surrounding the mobile home,” stated SBCFD. “With the occupancy already badly damaged, firefighters were stepping through the flooring; using rotary saws, alternate access points were cut, and the fire was knocked down as the subject was discovered and extracted from the home.”

The department said that rescuers pulled an adult female, who was not publicly identified, out of a back bedroom that had caught fire, and paramedics declared her dead at the scene.

“One dog was found deceased inside as well,” said fire officials. “However, two others were outside the property and survived. Animal control was contacted to assist.”

According to SBCFD, the second resident of the home was not present at the time of the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
