EXCLUSIVE: Filmoption International has boarded genre feature Lucid ahead of its international premiere at Sitges Film Festival in Spain, where it is in competition for the Noves Visions Award, and its U.S. premiere at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival this month.
Lucid, written and directed by Deanna Milligan and Ramsey Fendall, had its world premiere at Fantasia Film Festival this summer. Filmoption has boarded the film as Canadian distributor and will be handling world sales.
Pic follows Mia, an art student who is on the verge of being expelled from school, as she finds her last hope for combating her creative block in a magical lucid dreaming elixir. In addition to awakening her creativity, the potion also unleashes a number of dark monsters that inhabit her subconscious, one of which is her mother, who appears transformed into a hairy monster that Mia is forced to confront.
Shot on 35 mm and Super 8, the movie stars Caitlin Acken Taylor (Pistol), Georgia Acken (The Sacrifice Game), Amber Dandelion, John Luna and Vivian Vanderpuss (RuPaul’s Drag Race) who also designed and wears the hair monster costume. Cinematography comes from Ramsey Fendall, and producer is Emanuel Foucault.
“As the film’s Canadian distributor and international sales agent, we are proud to champion a film that is so clearly resonating with audiences. Lucid’s originality and unique vision is what drew us to the project and we look forward to launching it globally through festivals, followed by a theatrical release in Canada,” said Filmoption’s vice-president of distribution, Isabelle Legault.
The film’s composer Marta Jaciubek-McKeever tragically passed away this week after a two-year battle with cancer. The project evolved from a short film of the same name and features music from Jaciubek-McKeever, James Wollam (Tears for Fears) and guitarist Ayla Tesler Mabe (formerly of the band Calpurnia).
