A 22-year-old California State University, Long Beach student stabbed to death by one of his roommates over the weekend has been identified.
The Oct. 5 incident occurred at around 10:40 a.m. in the 1300 block of Temple Avenue, according to officials with the Long Beach Police Department.
Responding officers found two men suffering from stab wounds to the upper body. One of the victims was rushed to the hospital in stable condition, while the other victim, now identified as Spencer Timms, an industrial design student at the university, was declared dead at the scene.
The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s report listed his cause of death as multiple stab wounds to the chest.
The suspect, 34-year-old Alejandro Iniestra, a Long Beach resident, remained at the scene and was taken into custody without incident, police said.
A motive for the deadly violence is not known, but investigators believe the 34-year-old attacked one of his roommates before turning on the other.
Iniestra was booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. His bail was set at $2 million.
In a statement to KTLA, university officials confirmed the deceased victim was a student, saying:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our student, Spencer Timms. We have been in touch with Spencer’s family and have been reaching out to and supporting his Beach classmates and faculty.”
Other students echoed the sentiment, saying violence like that rarely occurs among the campus community.
“I just thought it was really sad. It’ s never that serious. We’re just here trying to get an education, so I pray for him, and I pray for his family because you never expect something like that. Everybody here is super nice, so you would never think something like that would happen,” CSULB student Isaac Wright told KTLA.
The identity of the surviving roommate has not been released.
Detectives plan to present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.
