A woman who police say was involved in a hit-and-run collision while driving a U-Haul died Wednesday night after she abandoned the truck, blocked the road and then was hit by an oncoming vehicle.
It happened around 7:05 p.m. on El Toro Road in Laguna Beach, just south of a Highway 73 overpass.
According to the Laguna Beach Police Department, minutes earlier, a 46-year-old woman was involved in a crash in Rancho Mission Viejo and then fled the scene in the U-Haul.
The other vehicle involved in the collision followed the U-Haul until the driver parked it “perpendicular to the roadway,” blocking traffic as she abandoned it and began walking down El Toro Road.
As bystanders attempted to move the U-Haul out of the roadway, the woman crossed the road and was hit by an oncoming vehicle.
The woman suffered fatal injuries and was taken to a local hospital by ambulance where she was ultimately pronounced dead.
The driver of the vehicle that struck her remained on scene and “fully cooperated with the investigation,” police said. Impairment was not believed to be a factor in that crash.
The crash remains under investigation, and anyone with information is urged to contact the Laguna Beach Police Department at 949-497-0701.
The woman’s identity has not yet been released.
