SOMERVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Friday night’s win over Scottsboro was a big win for the Brewer Patriots in multiple ways.

It was the team’s second win of the year and their second win ever over the Wildcats, a team that hadn’t lost a region game at home since 2021, was ranked in the top 10 in 5A and was celebrating homecoming.

“Everybody fought together, we had some adversity, we had about 20 false start penalties on our own on offense, Scottsboro would do a shift, and it would cause some of our guys to flinch, some of them actually fired off, so we overcame a little bit of adversity and just they all fought together,” Brewer Head Coach Jordan Miller said. “We made adjustments at halftime as coaches, players were in there communicating with each other on what we needed to do, and just came out wanting it in the second half.”

Friday’s win was one of the biggest upsets across the Tennessee Valley this high school football season.

The Patriots rode a four-game losing streak heading into the game, something quarterback Anthony Drinkard says they were tired of.

“I think we just got tired of losing, I’m gonna be honest, and we had a good week of practice,” Drinkard said. “We came out there and decided to get a win.”

“Just a desire to quit losing to finally show people that we are as good as we feel like we can be, and we have the potential, just like anybody else, to go out and win on Friday night,” Miller said. “If we are chasing victory, you aren’t guaranteed it until it hits four zeros, but we have all the right to be in that talk.”

The win gave the Patriots some confidence that they hope to ride for the rest of the season.

“It was great. It was a great feeling, you know just to go out there and get a win, first get a win, get us out of that losing streak, and then to beat Scottsboro on their home field on their homecoming, that was just great,” Drinkard said.

Brewer currently sits in fifth place in Class 5A Region 8, and while the Patriots have some work to do to get a top-four seed in the region, the win gives them life for a playoff berth.

“It was just an eye opener for them again, just to show that hey, the losses we learn from them, we have the potential, and let’s move forward, and we don’t know where it’s going to lead us, it could lead us in a thousand different ways,” Miller said. “We are just going to game by game, day by day, and see where we end up at the end of the season.”

Brewer hosts Boaz Friday night as they look to make it two straight wins.
