Two young girls were taken to the hospital Tuesday afternoon following a fire at their home in Vermont Knolls, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The fire was first reported around 5:10 p.m. on the 8500 block of South Vermont Avenue.

Responding fire crews found the fire burning in one unit of a seven-story apartment building, which officials said was being “held in check” by the unit’s sprinkler system.

Video shared on the Citizen app showed rushing water from the upstairs apartment running down into a shared courtyard of the complex as firefighters attempted to gain entry into the apartment via the roof and front door.

Firefighters were eventually able to get inside and rescue two girls, ages 10 and 7, and carry them to safety.

Both girls were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, officials said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately released, but officials said the blaze involved an electric scooter’s lithium-ion battery that caught fire. It’s unclear if the scooter was the initial source of the fire.

In total, 34 firefighters responded to the scene and were able to extinguish the flames in under 25 minutes. An LAFD Hazardous Materials squad was called to the scene to assist with the lithium-ion battery cleanup.

Investigators will work to determine the exact cause of the fire.
