For longtime fans of Southern California bakery chain Porto’s, the news is like recovering a beloved comfort food. A bakery favorite that had been missing for several years is back—at least for a limited time.
The item in question is the Rellenito, which Porto’s describes as:
A blend of ripe maduros and green plantain mashed and folded around our signature black bean puree, slow-simmered with roasted peppers and Spanish spices, hand tossed in granulated sugar.
Rolled, sweet, sugar deliciousness is what people loved. Heat them up, and they’re extra heavenly. Just why they disappeared is a mystery.
We asked Porto’s for comment, but so far, they haven’t provided one. However, this author remembers them disappearing around the time of COVID-19 when many restaurants limited their menu selections to make cooking and takeout easier. The rellenitos just recently started appearing on some Porto’s billboards saying they were back for a limited time.
Like the McRib sandwich, this sweet treat has fans likely lining up again. On social media, fans are ecstatic.
Jennifer commented, “Been waiting so long for the return of these. Thank you for listening to the requests.” Priscilla said, “Those were my mother’s favorite. Going to have to make the long drive to get some in honor of my mom.” Maira had this to say, “Omg! I was so devastated when it was removed from the menu! Can’t wait to go back and try it again… thank you for bringing it back.”
Just how long they’ll stay—we don’t know yet. What we do know is that Southern California loves its Porto’s. Rosa Porto brought her recipes from Cuba and slowly grew her business in California.
The bakery chain says Porto’s has gradually grown into six current locations in Glendale, Burbank, Downey, Buena Park, West Covina, and Northridge, with a seventh location in the Downtown Disney District on the way.
Porto’s took the number one spot on “Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the US.” In 2021, Porto’s Bakery was voted Best Bakery in the Southland, according to the Los Angeles Times.
