The cost of street parking in the City of Angels may soon feel hellish to some.

On Friday, the L.A. City Council voted 10-0 to increase the parking meter rate by 50% — from a dollar to $1.50. The Los Angeles Department of Transportation currently charges between $1 and $8.50 for metered parking, depending on the area.

It’s the first change in parking meter rates in the city of L.A. in over a decade.

The rate hike isn’t the only meter-related change that was approved. Additionally, the city council voted to extend daily operating hours of parking meters to midnight in high-traffic areas and 8 p.m. on any other metered streets.

Meters will also start operating on Sundays, with exceptions for case-by-case situations, according to the city council. As of now, they only operate Monday through Saturday.

The measure passed by L.A. city leaders also directs the Department of Transportation to report to the city council every five years to adjust rates.

The rate hikes are expected to bring in $14.4 million in additional revenue, according to the city council.

It is not clear when the changes will go into effect.

There are 83 LADOT Parking Meter Zones across the city that include over 35,000 public metered parking spaces, using both single-space meters and multi-space pay stations.
