Hellerup | $1.38 million (8.75 million Danish kroner)

A three-bedroom apartment in a historic villa in the Copenhagen suburbs

This three-bedroom, one-bath apartment is on the top two floors of a 1902 villa in Hellerup, an affluent district in the suburb of Gentofte, just north of Copenhagen.

Hellerup, about four miles north of central Copenhagen, is bordered on the east by the Oresund, the strait running between Denmark and Sweden. It offers upscale shopping, as well as parks, a picturesque harbor, beautiful beaches, and plenty of train and bus options for reaching downtown Copenhagen. This villa is on Bernstorffsvej, an avenue in a residential area dotted with mansions, including some housing foreign embassies, a hospital and schools.

While the area around the 0.25-acre property is primarily residential, the nearby Bernstorff Park includes the Bernstorff Palace, which has a teahouse, art exhibits and gardens. To the east is the Strandvejen, with upscale boutique shops, cafes and restaurants, along with coastal views. The Experimentarium, a hands-on science center, is also in Hellerup. Copenhagen Airport is about 10 miles south of Hellerup.

Size: 1,173 square feet

Price per square foot: $1,169

Indoors: The four-story red villa, which has elements of Italian style and Nordic romanticism under an asymmetrical roof, retains many architectural details, including arched windows, a ceiling rosette and decorative cornices. Floors are plank and mosaic parquet.

Stairs ascend to the third floor, where there is an entry landing with doors opening to the bathroom and a bedroom. The bathroom has a shower and sink with exposed taps, along with laundry facilities. The bedroom has a triple window and a wall of built-in closets.

A hallway leads to the kitchen, which has stone countertops, a half-moon window, and a door that opens to a rooftop terrace. Beyond the kitchen is the living room, which has a wood-burning stove, arched windows and doors to a circular balcony.

The attic level has two bedrooms, one with exposed ceiling beams. Both bedrooms have roof windows. The entire villa is also for sale for 20.75 million Danish kroner ($3.25 million).

Outdoor space: The terrace off the kitchen is spacious, as is the balcony off the living room. The apartment’s owner can use a portion of the villa’s garden.

Costs: Monthly ownership costs for this property, which typically include property tax, insurance, waste collection and homeowners’ association fees, are 3,921 kroner ($615). Closing costs include a registration fee of 0.6 percent of the purchase price, plus a fixed amount of 1,850 kroner ($290).

Hellerup | $1.37 million (8.7 million Danish kroner)

A two-story townhouse with three bedrooms in a Copenhagen suburb

This three-bedroom, one-bath townhouse from 1899 is hidden away in a courtyard in Hellerup.

The home sits just off Strandvejen, the famous coastal road along the Oresund that has many shops, cafes and restaurants. A number of beaches and Hellerup Harbor are minutes away, as is Oregard Park, which surrounds a museum in a historic former country house. Popular activities for residents include cycling along Strandvejen, golfing, sailing, kayaking, windsurfing and kitesurfing at Hellerup Beach.

Size: 1,539 square feet

Price per square foot: $890

Indoors: This 19th-century townhouse has retained much of its historic character, with details including stucco, ceiling rosettes, decorative cornices and plank floors. The rooms have custom-made radiator covers.

The front door opens to an entrance hall with a laundry room and stairs to the second floor landing, where a door leads to the large open kitchen, dining and living area. The galley kitchen has off-white cabinets and butcher block countertops with a double sink. The dining area has a bench built into the kitchen’s island. The living area has access to Juliet balconies.

There are three bedrooms, each with triple casement windows, and a bathroom off the living area. The bathroom has underfloor heating and a glass-walled shower.

Taarbaek | $1.38 million (8.75 million Danish kroner)

A renovated two-bedroom thatched cottage in a suburb of Copenhagen

This two-bedroom, two-bath, thatched-roof house was built in 1802 as a fisherman’s cottage in Lyngby-Taarbaek, a municipality on the fringes of Copenhagen.

About eight miles north of central Copenhagen, the Taarbaek neighborhood was a fishing village that developed into a popular summer destination and spa town during the 19th century, driven in part by the construction of its harbor and a railway. Today, it is a quiet, prosperous neighborhood with luxury villas along the waterfront avenue, called Strandvejen.

The cottage is steps away from the waterfront harbor and a sailing club, with a bakery and deli right around the corner. The village has a market, school, sports clubs, bank and other amenities; a wider range of offerings can be found in the larger community of Klampenborg, about a mile south.

To the west is Dyrehaven (or “deer park”), a UNESCO World Heritage Site offering a forest with free-roaming deer, an old amusement park called Bakken and the historic Hermitage royal hunting lodge. Also nearby are two restaurants, Den Rode Cottage and Den Gule Cottage, which occupy two 19th-century buildings that were part of the former Klampenborg Spa.

Copenhagen Airport is about 15 miles south of Taarbaek.

Size: 883 square feet

Price per square foot: $1,552

Indoors: This 19th-century former fisherman’s cottage was recently renovated to add modern interiors, earning a local architectural prize in 2015. The front door opens to the kitchen and living area, with a door leading to a small bedroom on the left.

The open kitchen has a breakfast bar and distressed black and forest green cabinets topped with brass countertops. The floors are wide plank. Brass is also used in the bathroom, which has a shower, double sinks and built-in shelves. The living room has floor-to-ceiling shelves flanking the stairs and a door opening to a terrace.

The stairs ascend to a second-floor living area under the cottage’s steeply pitched roof. There are half-moon windows, and a door opens to a balcony overlooking a pathway to the harbor. The living area is separated from a bedroom by a partition of glass with metal grilles. The other bedroom has an en suite bathroom and walk-in closet.

Outdoor space: There is an enclosed south-facing terrace and a balcony with views of the Oresund, the waterway between Denmark and Sweden.

Costs: The monthly ownership costs for this property are 4,985 kroner ($785). Closing costs for the buyer include a registration fee of 0.6 percent of the property’s purchase price plus a fixed amount of 1,850 kroner ($290).
