After Corey Phillip Paris struck up a conversation with Symphonie Privett at a Hartford, Conn., fund-raiser gala in December 2022, she gave him her phone number, but she was not convinced there was any romantic potential between them.

“I thought he was charming and attractive” and that he’d make for “a cool friend,” said Ms. Privett, a morning anchor for FOX61 News in Hartford, of Mr. Paris, who is a Democratic member of the Connecticut House of Representatives. “But I never envisioned myself being interested in a politician.”

“She dodged me for three weeks,” Mr. Paris said.

When Mr. Paris eventually called Ms. Privett and invited her out for dinner, she countered with lunch. In late December, they met at Trumbull Kitchen in Hartford, Conn., for their first date — sort of. Mr. Paris thought it was romantic; Ms. Privett did not.

“That was just me getting to know him,” she said.

Ms. Privett was intrigued enough, however, that she agreed to meet Mr. Paris again in early January for a daylong outing in Manhattan. They ate lunch at Jacob’s Pickles on the Upper West Side. They then went to the Edge, an observation deck at Hudson Yards, to the Highline for a walk, Starbucks Reserve Roastery in the Meatpacking District for coffee, and Beauty & Essex on the Lower East Side for dinner.

“I got to see who he was instead of who I assumed he would be,” Ms. Privett said. “I saw that he was really down-to-earth, hilarious and really sweet.”
