LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Lauderdale County Sheriff Joe Hamilton has a message for a man he said stole a sheriff’s office camera being used to investigate criminal activity in Elgin.
LCSO said that Michael Horton is facing theft charges after he stole a camera owned by the sheriff’s office. They were able to identify Horton as the person who took it because there were pictures of him taken by the camera.
The sheriff’s office said that it has been conducting an investigation into criminal activity, including drug activity and criminal littering, on County Road 581 in the Elgin community. According to LCSO, the littering of nails, glass and other debris caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to vehicles.
Hamilton said Horton took the camera being used by the office as part of its investigation into the criminal activity. He added that LCSO is also trying to impose the year-long sentence from a prior case involving Horton.
“The next time you want to steal the Sheriff’s Office camera, try not to take a picture of yourself. Not only do you have new theft charges but we are filing a motion to impose the 12-month sentence from your last case. Hope you like bologna,” the sheriff said.
Horton was arrested and booked in to the Lauderdale County Jail.
