Rep. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina) gave voice Wednesday to Republican fears that the party will lose the competitive Senate race in North Carolina, linking to a Washington Post report on the growing concerns.
“I say this with the pale gravity it deserves, but we lose North Carolina Senate seat, for SURE,” Mace wrote on X.
The Post reported Wednesday that Republican officials, once hopeful they would hold the Senate seat, are growing increasingly anxious that former Republican National Committee chair Michael Whatley is on pace to lose the Senate contest to former governor Roy Cooper, the Democratic nominee.
Republican operatives, including some close to President Donald Trump, conceded privately that Whatley has been hampered by his reluctance to distance himself from Trump. Whatley, a former state party chair, won Trump’s endorsement to lead the national party in 2024 in part because he boosted Trump’s false claims that the 2020 election was stolen.
Appearing with Trump in Gastonia, North Carolina, last week, Whatley declared that he is “still with that guy.”
