In an email interview, she compared the lavish coffee-table book “Annie Lennox: Retrospective” to a “souvenir of frozen moments” with “bite-size memories and reflections.” SCOTT HELLER

Describe your ideal reading experience (when, where, what, how).

Early evening.

At home or hotel room.

A good reading light.

A comfortable sofa to sink into,

with good cushions for support.

No distractions.

What’s the last great book you read?

“Caste,” an exceptional book by Isabel Wilkerson. I think this should be essential reading for anyone who wants to have a deeper understanding of the roots and effects of racism, right up to the present day.

What book has had the greatest impact on you?

“When Things Fall Apart,” by Pema Chödrön. I discovered this book at a time when I was in the midst of a personal crisis. I envisaged the substance of my life as being shattered into tiny pieces, gathered up into a big old pile of breakage. Sometimes you happen to come upon a book that literally leaps off the shelf toward you. You have an inkling that this particular publication might hold the solution to all of life’s trials and tribulations. This book contains tremendous insights for brokenness, healing and potential transformation.
