A 28-year-old Santa Ana man has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run collision in Newport Beach that left a woman in critical condition, authorities said.
The crash occurred Monday, according to the Newport Beach Police Department. Investigators said the victim, a 48-year-old Newport Beach resident, was struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene. She was taken to a hospital, where she remains in critical but stable condition.
Police said investigators used “investigative techniques and technology” to identify a possible suspect vehicle. On Tuesday, at about 4:15 p.m., officers conducting surveillance located the vehicle near McFadden Avenue and Harbor Boulevard in Santa Ana. A traffic stop was initiated, and the occupants were detained.
Authorities said evidence, witness statements, and visible collision damage connected the vehicle and one of its passengers to the crash.
The driver, Rafael Torres, 28, of Santa Ana, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run resulting in injury. He was booked into the Newport Beach Jail.
The Newport Beach Police Department is asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has information about the suspect vehicle to contact Traffic Investigator Laverty at 949-644-3747.
