How Would a Government Shutdown Affect You?

The countdown for a government shutdown is now underway: Unless Congress can reach a deal in time, some operations will go dark at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

The effects of a shutdown are complicated. Washington will not immediately cease operations. Some federal benefits and services, particularly those involving Social Security and public safety, will continue. A few agencies, like the Postal Service, are self-funded, while others may rely on reserves. Some impacts would happen right away; others may not be felt for weeks.

And while there is still time for Democrats and Republicans to strike a deal, we want to hear your questions and concerns. Are you a federal worker preparing for furloughs or layoffs? Are you a business owner who depends on government contracts, or do you receive government services or benefits?

We may reach out to hear more about your submission, but we will not publish any part of your response without contacting you first, and we will never publicly share your personal information.

Jacey Fortin covers a wide range of subjects for The Times, including extreme weather, court cases and state politics across the country.
