LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The Lawrence County Search and Rescue Team is upgrading some equipment to help speed up search and rescue efforts.
According to the sheriff’s office, the Search and Rescue Team has recently obtained state-of-the-art rope rescue equipment for its rope-rescue–trained members.
The Sheriff’s Office said that the investment strengthens the team’s ability to respond to a wide variety of technical rescue operations across Lawrence County and surrounding areas.
The new equipment includes the following:
- harnesses
- ropes
- carabiners
- helmets
- gear bags
- pulleys
- other specialized tools
LCSO said that the new equipment will ensure team members have the most modern and reliable gear available when operating in challenging and high-risk environments.
“These upgrades will be critical for precision rescues such as high-angle operations, cliffside incidents, and technical rescues deep within Bankhead National Forest.” said the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.
In addition to rescue gear, the team has also received a Starlink satellite internet system, which will provide reliable communications in remote areas of the forest.
With the new technology, incident command will now be able to maintain live communication with rescuers in the field, relay critical updates, and coordinate seamlessly with other responding agencies.
LCSO told News 19 that the system will contribute to faster rescues and greater safety for both victims and first responders.
Sheriff Max Sanders praised the team’s dedication, stating:
“Our deputies train hard and dedicate countless hours to be ready for whatever comes their way. This new rope rescue equipment and Starlink system make sure that when someone’s life is hanging in the balance, our team has the tools and communications they need to bring them home safely.”
