A local assisted living facility has opened a new sensory room designed for dementia patients.

Residents of the Connections program at The Havens at Antelope Valley, located on 15th Street W in Lancaster, now have a space designed specifically to “gently spark memories, calm restless moments and invite discovery,” the facility said in a media release.

“The newly-opened sensory room offers an atmosphere where shifting LED lights, the touch of a textured wall or the sound of flowing water can provide comfort and ease for those living with dementia,” officials said in the release. “The most recent addition offers an oasis from the commotion of life, instead presenting resources that can soothe, intrigue and quietly entertain all at once.”

In addition to LED lights and a “fidget wall” made up of different textures and patterns, there is also a calming nature wall and comfy seating arrangements. All the while, the wall-mounted waterfall devices fill the room with soft, flowing water noises.

The room has been incorporated into the residents’ daily routines – and some even have their experience tailored to accommodate their needs.

“We see it as our responsibility to keep learning and adapting how we support those living with dementia,” said The Havens at Antelope Valley Executive Director Katherine Aleman. “By drawing from current research and the resources available to us, we’re able to introduce meaningful experiences like the sensory room that can truly make a difference in daily life.”
