Between streaming and cable, viewers have a seemingly endless variety of things to watch. Here is a selection of TV shows and specials that are airing or streaming this week, Sept. 29-Oct. 5. Details and times are subject to change.

What nightmares are made of.

Most horror films center on a killer on the loose — an uncommon occurrence among us humans, thankfully. But that’s every day for animals in the wild, as “Nightmares of Nature: Cabin in the Woods,” a new nature documentary, reminds us. Narrated by Maya Hawke, the series dives into lives of prey — in this case a mouse, raccoon and frog — who run from predators only to find shelter in a cabin with even more hazards. Streaming Tuesday on Netflix.

Ed Gein is one of the most notorious murders in history: In 1957, when the police searched his house and found the body of Bernice Worden, they also uncovered his habit of robbing graves and using women’s body parts to create house décor, including an armchair upholstered with human skin. His crimes went on to inspire some of the most popular depictions of sociopaths, including “Psycho,” “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Silence of the Lambs.” So naturally, it was time for Ryan Murphy to fictionalize Gein’s life story for “Monster: The Ed Gein Story,” a new season of his anthology series. His two other seasons focused on Erik and Lyle Menendez and Jeffrey Dahmer. Streaming Friday on Netflix.

From Philly to the Windy City.

“Chicago Med” is a classic medical procedural that follows a team of doctors triaging patients and trying to save their lives. Right after it airs, “Chicago Fire” comes back for its 14th season, with Sal Vasquez (Brandon Larracuente) joining Firehouse 51. Finally, “Chicago P.D.” starts its 13th season with a newbie Eva Imani (Arienne Mandi) joining the force. Wednesday starting at 8 p.m. on NBC.

A little bit southeast from the fictional drama in Chicago, the usual shenanigans are going down in Philadelphia during the fifth season premiere of “Abbott Elementary.” If the trailer is any indication, things are as kooky as ever, with people falling off bikes, pigeons wreaking havoc and a ceiling collapsing. Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. on ABC and streaming the next day on Hulu and Disney+.

A yacht, love pods and hockey pucks.

“Below Deck,” the Bravo franchise that follows crew members on a charter yacht, has been keeping viewers busy this year with back-to-back iterations of the show airing. After the 12th season of “Below Deck” finished two weeks ago, we’re leaving St. Maarten and St. Barths for the coast of Spain in Season 10 of “Below Deck Mediterranean.” You’ll recognize some familiar faces — Aesha Scott is returning as chief stew and Captain Sandy Yawn is at the helm. Monday at 8 p.m. on Bravo.

And back in the States, singles from Denver are entering their pods for a new season of “Love Is Blind.” The format remains the same — people get to know one another and possibly get engaged, sight unseen. Then they go on a honeymoon trip and decide if they want to get married. Based on the success rates of past seasons, which isn’t high, it seems that, in fact, love is not blind — but the show is entertaining nonetheless. Streaming Wednesday on Netflix.

Hockey season is about to begin, and it’s time to pregame with the documentary series “Faceoff: Inside the N.H.L.” In one episode Sidney Crosby and Anze Kopitar share their viewpoints on the 2024-25 season. In another, the widow of Johnny Gaudreau of the Columbus Blue Jackets, who, along with his brother and fellow hockey player Matthew Gaudreau, was killed by a drunken driver, talks about her grief. Streaming Friday on Prime Video.

Fairy tales and a washed-up QB.

What started as a character in a skit created by the former N.F.L. quarterback Eli Manning is now a TV series. “Chad Powers” arrives with Glen Powell instead of Manning playing Russ Holliday, a former college quarterback who poses as the titular Chad Powers to be a walk-on player and help the struggling South Georgia Catfish team. Streaming Tuesday on Hulu.

A cartoon version of Michael Buckley’s books is hitting the small screen this week with the new series “The Sisters Grimm.” Ariel Winter and Leah Newman voice the sisters Sabrina and Daphne as they try to solve the mystery of their parents’ disappearance while interacting with townsfolk straight from fairy tales. Streaming Friday on Apple TV+.

Shivani Gonzalez is a news assistant at The Times who writes a weekly TV column and contributes to a variety of sections.
