Henry Jaglom, the independent filmmaker whose work foregrounded the stories of women, focused on the inner workings of the Industry and often paralleled his own life experiences, has died at age 87. His daughter Sabrina confirmed the news.

“My father passed at home on Monday with my brother Simon and I and Victoria Foyt by his side,” she told Deadline.

Many of Jaglom’s best-known films came in a stretch between the early ’90s and mid-2000s. They included Eating, Venice/Venice, Babyfever, Last Summer in the Hamptons, Déjà Vu, Festival in Cannes and Going Shopping. Most of his films from this era starred both Jaglom and Foyt, his second wife whom he married in 1991. The duo co-wrote Babyfever, Last Summer in the Hamptons, Déjà Vu, Festival in Cannes and Going Shopping. Eating, Babyfever and Going Shopping formed what came to be known as his ‘Women’s Trilogy’.

Jaglom’s career stretched for 50-plus years and saw him collaborate with some of Hollywood’s biggest names. He trained with Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio in New York before moving to Hollywood. His first film work came as an editor on Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider.

His directorial debut came in 1972 with A Safe Place, starring Easy Rider breakout Jack Nicholson, Tuesday Weld and Orson Welles, who would become a friend and frequent collaborator. As would become typical with many Jaglom films, A Safe Place focused on a female protagonist (Weld) and her journey.

His next film Tracks featured another Easy Rider star, Dennis Hopper, and Dean Stockwell in a story about a soldier’s return from Vietnam.

In 1979, he married Patrice Townsend. The duo divorced in 1983.

Jaglom also acted in films made by some of those he cast in his pictures. In 1971, he was in Nicholson’s Drive, He Said and Hopper’s legendary The Last Movie. At about the same time, he was shooting scenes for and Welles’ long-aborning The Other Side of the Wind. His TV work included appearances opposite Sally Field in Gidget and The Flying Nun.

Appropriately, given this ferment, many of Jaglom’s films were set in and around the film industry. Those titles include Venice/Venice, which starred Jaglom, Nelly Alard, Melissa Leo, David Duchovny and John Landis; Last Summer in the Hamptons; Someone to Love, which features Orson Welles’ final film performance; Festival in Cannes; Hollywood Dreams; Queen of the Lot; The M Word and Ovation. The last four of those films star Tanna Frederick, who was featured in each of the director’s final six films.

In 2013, he published My Lunches With Orson: Conversations Between Henry Jaglom and Orson Welles, which was edited by Peter Biskind.

Jaglom is survived by his daughter Sabrina, who is also a filmmaker, and son Simon.
