UPDATE: Spider-Man has just spun a big old web around Disney/Pixar’s Italian cat Gatto, with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse now going head-to-head with the rival animation title on June 18, 2027.
When will the Venetian cat jump gondola? Err, meaning move to another date?
Sony said Wednesday that Beyond the Spider-Verse is shifting its release date a week earlier to Father’s Day weekend, a rich time for animated movies and historically occupied by Pixar movies. As we know, Pixar originals haven’t been faring well post-Covid, with Elio recently crashing to a $20.8 million domestic start, finaling at $73M stateside and just more than $154M worldwide.
Aside from Gatto, New Line has an untitled event film on Father’s Day weekend 2027.
Beyond Spider-verse and Gatto will open in the wake of Universal’s live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 on June 11, 2027; meaning, there’s a lot of family already in summer 2027.
For those motion picture studios in need of major release date before July 4th, June 25 is now open, that is unless Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek 5 decides to move up from its Wednesday, June 30, 2027 date.
Directors on Beyond the Spider-Verse are Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson. Producers are Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Jinko Gotoh and Avi Arad. EPs are Aditya Sood and Christina Steinberg.
PREVIOUSLY, July 18: Fans will have to wait three weeks longer for Sony’s threequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is now opening on June 25, 2027 instead of June 4, 2027.
2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Together with 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the movies about the alter-verse of Spider-Man, Miles Morales and all his web-slinging friends has amassed $1.08 billion at the global box office.
Given how a new animation style is invented with each installment, there’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears that go into these movies. When Across the Spider-Verse had its world premiere in June 2023, we were told by a source close to the film that that print was wet; the filmmakers worked on the feature to the last minute.
Part 3 of the series finds Morales on the run, and his friends like Gwen might not be able to save him. As fans may recall at the end of Across the Spider-Verse, he discovered that a parallel version of him had transformed into the villainous Prowler in an iteration of Earth that lacks a Spider-Man and features a lawless New York City.
The movie has been moved a few times on the calendar. It originally had a theatrical release date of March 29, 2024, and was pushed back in July 2023 due to the strikes.
Beyond the Spider-Verse is directed by Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson and written by David Callam, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Lord and Miller produce with Amy Pascal, Avi Arad and Jinko Gotoh.
Also added to the release-date calendar is Sony Pictures Animation’s Buds, on March 12, 2027.
