Three people were shot at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility in Dallas on Wednesday morning, ICE officials said.

Kristi Noem, the secretary of homeland security, said there were “multiple injuries and fatalities” and the shooter was found dead of a “self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

Details of the circumstances were not immediately available. The Dallas Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Texas Department of Public Safety said it did not yet have information to share.

“While we don’t know motive yet, we know that our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them,” Ms. Noem said. “It must stop.”

The acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement said that three people had been wounded in the shooting. “We have three individuals who are down at this time, we’re not sure on their condition,” the acting director, Todd Lyons, said in an interview on CNN. “The scene is secure.”

J. David Goodman is the Houston bureau chief for The Times, reporting on Texas and Oklahoma.

Hamed Aleaziz covers the Department of Homeland Security and immigration policy for The Times.
