As his race to become Florida’s next governor appears to be tightening, Rep. Byron Donalds (R) seems to be keeping his distance from President Donald Trump, at least on his campaign website.
Donalds this week became the latest Republican candidate to strip some mentions of the increasingly unpopular president from his campaign site ahead of the November general election.
Eight mentions of Trump’s endorsement on the homepage were removed. So was a photo of Donalds and his wife posing with Trump, and a section titled “Enact the Trump Agenda” at the top of his policy priorities.
The news, first reported by the Miami Herald, comes as his race against former congressman David Jolly appears to be getting more competitive.
The nonpartisan elections site Sabato’s Crystal Ball on Tuesday shifted the Florida gubernatorial contest as one that is “likely Republican” to one that “leans Republican.”
Donalds campaign spokesman Gates McGavick said in a statement that the “website reflects Byron’s focus on the issues that matter most to Floridians — affordability, insurance costs, and government transparency.”
