Former Vice President — and failed presidential candidate — Kamala Harris returned to the scene of the blunder today when she appeared as a guest on ABC’s The View, and she addressed her ruinous 2024 appearance on the show when she failed to make a clear distinction between herself and the unpopular President Joe Biden.
Harris has been on a publicity tour for her new memoir 107 Days, in which she writes about the 2024 View visit. In the earlier appearance just before the presidential election, Harris was asked by co-host Sunny Hostin if she would have done anything differently than Biden. Harris said, “There is not a thing that comes to mind.”
“I had no idea I’d just pulled the pin on a hand grenade,” Harris writes in the new book, adding that her staff “were besides themselves” with her answer, realizing that she had handed a “gift to the Trump campaign.”
On today’s episode — watch the clip below — Harris recalled the earlier visit and its impact on her campaign, saying she “didn’t fully appreciate how much people wanted to know there was a difference between me and President Biden.”
“I thought it was obvious,” Harris said about those differences, “and I didn’t want to offer a difference in a way that would be received or suggested to be a criticism.” During her campaign events, she said, she often spoke of differences between herself and Biden. “I thought I was making the point, and I realize now that I didn’t fully appreciate how much of an issue it was.”
Hostin, who today told Harris that she herself knew in the 2024 interview that Biden was “deeply unpopular,” asked Harris whether she felt the appearance had “tipped the election.” When Harris said no, co-host Joy Behar quipped, “Good, because Sunny doesn’t want to take the blame.”
Harris then went on to say she thought the main factor in Trump’s 2024 election victory was his promise to curb inflation. “He lied,” Harris said.
