Nobody knows how to throw a party like Martha Stewart.

More than four decades after the release of “Entertaining,” her classic debut cookbook that solidified her status as a homemaking icon, the 84-year-old businesswoman is still hosting events better than anyone else’s — and sharing words of wisdom along the way.

“I hope every host feels confident and happy to open their homes. For guests, I would like them to feel welcome and eager to join in on the party,” says Stewart, who recently collaborated with Paperless Post on a collection of digital invitations inspired by her robust entertaining archive and cheeky wit. (A garden party invite jokes that “a little green never hurt anyone,” while one for a dinner gathering promises “scandalous conversation.”)

Below, Stewart shares some of her top entertaining dos and don’ts with Page Six Style ahead of the holiday season.

What are your best tried-and-true tips for fall and winter hostessing?

For hosts:

  1. Prepare ahead. A well-prepared host is a relaxed host. Set the table the night before and prep your menu in advance, so you can enjoy your guests.
  2. Think about the details. Thoughtful touches like personalized place cards or seasonal centerpieces make guests feel special.
  3. Enjoy yourself. The most important part of entertaining is truly connecting with your guests. Welcome them warmly, engage in conversation and savor every moment.

For guests:

  1. Arrive on time. It shows respect for your host’s efforts.
  2. Bring a thoughtful gift. It doesn’t have to be elaborate.
  3. Be gracious. Compliment the food, thank your host and engage warmly with other guests.

What’s the biggest entertaining mistake you see people making?

Not being organized. Pre-organization really does help a lot to get you in the mood and it also helps you a lot with cooking so you don’t leave things out and forget ingredients.

I’m a list-maker, a memo-writer, I do all of that. When I’m just ambling around, I’m dictating into my phone, making sure I get everything in order. I do it for my garden, I do it for my home, I do it for my laundry, I do it for my wardrobe.

What’s your absolute favorite hostess gift to receive?

Fresh flowers, a homemade treat or a beautiful candle are always appreciated.
