UN finanical crisis impacting credibility, members warn
One major crisis facing the UN as it gathers on Tuesday is the body’s ability to finance itself.
Many member states, including large contributors like the , have significant unpaid dues to the United Nations.
Currently there is a shortfall of $2.4 billion (€2 billion) in unpaid regular budget dues and $2.7 billion in peacekeeping dues. This has led to hiring freezes and a reduction in services and aid distribution, some of which is essential for survival in war-torn areas.
Switzerland is among member states who have warned that this situation is further eroding the UN’s already fragile credibility.
