A potentially dangerous situation at Righetti High School was quickly resolved on Monday when a School Resource Deputy confiscated a loaded handgun from a student, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office said.
The incident began around 1:30 p.m., when school staff reported to SRD Reynoso that a male student might be smoking marijuana in a bathroom. When the deputy confronted the student, he refused to comply and attempted to walk away. A struggle ensued, during which SRD Reynoso sustained minor injuries, including a cut on his finger and an abrasion on his elbow.
During the arrest process, deputies discovered multiple marijuana vapes and a loaded .22 caliber revolver hidden in the student’s backpack. The student, whose identity has not been released, was transported to a local hospital for medical clearance before being booked into Santa Maria Juvenile Hall.
He now faces charges including possessing a firearm on school grounds, resisting arrest, and possession of marijuana on school grounds by a minor.
The sheriff’s office credited the swift response of both school administrators and the on-campus deputy with preventing a potentially tragic outcome.
“Thanks to the quick coordination between school staff and SRD Reynoso, the firearm was safely confiscated before it could be used,” the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
