HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Primer Microschools has opened its first campus in Alabama, bringing its “small, personalized” learning model to Huntsville.
The new Primer microschool at 4217 9th Ave. in Huntsville will serve kindergarten through eighth grade and features mixed-age classrooms organized into K–2, 3–5, and 6–8 groups.
Primer said that it emphasizes core subjects such as math and reading, while also offering daily “Passion Pursuits,” which allow students to explore personal interests ranging from coding and podcasting to baking and graphic design.
The Huntsville campus is led by educators Monique Bridges, formerly a campus leader at Primer’s Liberty City microschool in Miami, and Jonathan Carter, a longtime teacher in Huntsville.
“As a teacher, my goal is to respect the students and families,” Carter said. “Primer allows me to meet them in a place to succeed—academically, emotionally, and socially. I am thrilled to get started.”
Primer, which also operates microschools in Florida and Arizona, said demand from Alabama families and educators prompted the expansion. The network accepts Education Savings Accounts (ESAs), including those funded by Alabama’s CHOOSE Act, and provides additional financial aid. Company officials said no student has been turned away due to cost.
“The launch of Primer in Alabama is a perfect example of the state’s CHOOSE Act being utilized to place kids in the best environment possible to help them learn at their own pace and excel at every level,” said Stephen Bridgers, Primer’s general manager for Alabama.
Primer was awarded the 2024 Yass Prize, a $1 million national award for education innovation. Enrollment at the new Primer Huntsville location is now open for the 2025–26 school year. For more information, please visit www.primer.com
