A motorist and a California Highway Patrol officer were injured after a collision in Temecula on Sunday night, authorities say.

Per a CHP news release, the crash occurred around 8:15 p.m. on Temecula Parkway at La Paz Road.

“An officer from the Temecula Area office was driving a marked Ford Explorer patrol vehicle eastbound on Temecula Parkway approaching the intersection of La Paz Road at approximately 55 miles per hour,” the news release states. “A 66-year-old male driver [in] a Toyota Prius…was stopped in the left turn lane of westbound Temecula Parkway…the driver of the Toyota entered into the left turn lane, proceeding to make a left turn onto La Paz Road at approximately 10 miles per hour.”

The Prius and the squad car then hit each other, with the left front of the patrol vehicle and the right front of the Toyota colliding.

The 66-year-old driver, a resident of Temecula, of the Prius was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries and released. His passenger, a 52-year old man from Menifee, was uninjured.

The officer involved in the crash was also taken to a hospital with minor injuries and later released. They were not identified by name.

An investigation into the incident is being conducted by CHP’s Temecula Area station and the California Highway Patrol Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
