Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for Boots, Norman Lear‘s comedic coming-of-age drama that takes on being gay in the military, starring Miles Heizer, Liam Oh and Vera Farmiga. The series premieres Oct. 9 on Netflix.
In the trailer, at his Marine Corps recruitment interview Heizer’s Cameron is asked “Why do you want to be a Marine, Cameron?”, to which he responds “Um, for…freedom.” Cue George Michael’s hit song “Freedom” sung by the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus, a group of 30 singers that includes U.S. Military veterans.
Boots, inspired by Greg Cope White’s memoir The Pink Marine, follows directionless, closeted Cameron Cope (Heizer) and his straight best friend Ray McAffey (Oh) as they join a diverse group of recruits. Set in the tough, unpredictable world of the U.S. Marine Corps in 1990, when being gay in the military was illegal, the ensemble navigates the literal and metaphorical landmines of boot camp, forging unlikely bonds and discovering their true selves in an environment designed to push them to their limits.
And pushing them to their limits is putting it mildly.
“What I see before me is a collection of f***-ups, jerk-offs and fat bodies,” screams their Staff Sergeant McKinnon, played by Cedrick Cooper, on their first day of boot camp as the recruits are put through more-than-grueling exercises.
“I told you it was gonna be rough,” says Cameron’s buddy Ray (Oh). “I thought you meant like mud, and some bug bites,” Cameron replies.
We also see Farmiga as Cameron’s narcissistic mother Barbara.
Series regular cast also includes Max Parker (Sergeant Robert “Bobby” Sullivan), Ana Ayora (Capt. Denise Fajardo), Angus O’Brien (Thaddeus Beau Sterling Hicks), Dominic Goodman (Isaiah Nash), Kieron Moore (Nicholas Slovacek), Nicholas Logan (Sergeant Cary Wayne Howitt), Rico Paris (Santos Santos) and Blake Burt (John Bowman).
Additional cast includes Brandon Tyler Moore (Cody Bowman), Zach Roerig (Sgt. Knox), Anthony Marble (Harlan McAffey) and Joy Osmanski (Setsuko McAffey), Ivan Hoey Jr. (Benjy Cope), Logan Gould (Mo Mason), Jack Kay (Joshua Jones), Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson (Alice), Jonathan Nieves (Eduardo Ochoa) and Brett Dalton (Sgt. Pitowski).
Andy Parker is creator/co-showrunner/executive producer; Jennifer Cecil serves as showrunner/executive producer. Also listed as executive producer Lear, who died in 2023, and Brent Miller through Act III Productions, Rachel Davidson, and Scott Hornbacher & Peter Hoar (episode 101). Sony Pictures Television, where Lear was based, is the studio.
